All - I just had a long and heartfelt conversation with Derval Brown's daughter, Curry. And I wanted to update you on the memorial service and other things.

Memorial Service

The memorial service for Derval Brown will take place this Friday, January 6, 2006 at the Central Rappahannock Library on Caroline Street in Downtown Fredericksburg. It will start at 1PM. The Stafford Democratic Committee will provide a floral arrangement for the service. Curry is encouraging those of us that would like to express our feelings and our remembrances of Derval to do so at the service.

Donations

Curry indicated that she will suggest donations for a granite bench in the library's garden area. We all know that Derval was an avid reader and passionate gardener; the idea of a bench at the library is wonderful. I am sure Curry will provide us finalized plans for the memorial bench at the service on Friday.

Derval's Dogs

Derval has two dogs that need to be adopted. There is a one year-old Border Collie Mix; she is a good dog but a Border Collie (so very intelligent, a bit skittish, needs a lot of structure). Derval's other dog is "Sam", he is about 4-5 years old (a Hound mix) and very sweet. Curry didn't think they needed to be adopted together, but that is certainly a possibility. The Border Collie does nip at heels so whomever adopts her will have to be prepared to provide a lot of structure and training. Sounds like she would do well on a farm. Please let me know if you know of anyone that has a warm, loving home for Derval's doggies. I'll direct any inquiries to Curry.

Lastly, most of us have a Derval story. She was whip-smart, spot-on, and very funny. I didn't know her as well as many of you, but on the occasions when she and I spoke, Derval had me in rapt attention. Her op/eds in the Stafford County Sun always resulted in letters to the editor (many pro and lots of con), but they furthered important dialogue in our community. I will miss her.

Warmest Regards,
